Going the Extra Mile: A Midnight Miracle for Baby Hridaya Jith

" What does it truly mean to go the extra mile?

For Baby Hridaya Jith, it meant hope, healing, and an entire medical team that refused to give up — even in the face of personal challenges.

Baby Hridaya Jith was admitted under the care of Dr. Deepa (Pediatrics) with ongoing vomiting and a distended abdomen. Despite treatments elsewhere, his condition wasn’t improving. He weighed only 8 kg, severely underweight for his age, where he should have been around 15 kg.

Investigations revealed a small bowel obstruction that couldn’t be managed conservatively. Surgery was the only option. Dr. Chandana (Paediatric Surgery) was called in — but there was a complication.

That very evening, Dr. Chandana’s mother-in-law was admitted to the Neuro HDU with a TIA (mini-stroke). By 10 PM, she was still at the hospital attending to her. Her two young children were home with just a maid.

Many would have chosen to refer the case elsewhere. But Dr. Chandana chose her patient.

At 11 PM, she and her husband made a tough call: he would stay back with his mother while Dr. Chandana rushed home to settle the children — and then returned to the hospital for the surgery.

Two other surgeons, Dr. Renny Napoleon and Dr. Mano Zac, even postponed their case to make the OR available.

Surgery revealed a diverticulum forming a band that caused the obstruction. A resection and anastomosis was performed. Thanks to the skillful support of Dr. Ashu and the Anaesthesia team, the fragile baby was safely managed throughout.

The road to recovery wasn’t easy. Hridaya Jith faced hypoalbuminemia, and his bowel function took time to return. But with constant monitoring, prayer, and dedication from Dr. Deepa, Dr. Anjitha, Dr. Chandana, and the whole team — Hridaya slowly regained strength.

Today, Baby Hridaya left the hospital in his parents’ arms — smiling, healthy, and whole.

A special thanks to every team member who went the extra mile... "
