The World Down Syndrome Day celebration was conducted on 18th March. The program aimed to raise awareness about Down syndrome, promote inclusion, and celebrate the abilities and talents.
The event was moderated by Neha, who guided the proceedings smoothly.
The program began with a prayer led by Fr. Abhijit.
This was followed by a melodious song presented by the PICU Team.
Dr. Elizabeth Varkey Cherian delivered the welcome address. The presidential address was given by Dr. Reni Gee Varghese, President of IAP Pathanamthitta, who emphasised the importance of awareness, early intervention, and societal support for individuals with Down syndrome.
The Director’s address was delivered by Dr. George Chandy Matteethra, who shared his personal experience in care and reinforced the institution’s dedication to inclusive healthcare and comprehensive child care.
Dr. Jaico from the Department of Psychiatry, shared valuable insights on holistic care, being emotionally connected and mental health support.
An informative session on “Neurology and Down Syndrome” was presented by Dr. Anjana Sajith, Pediatric Neurologist, who elaborated on the neurological aspects and care strategies.
Special Educator Vishnupriya then spoke about Group Therapy, highlighting its benefits in improving social and communication skills.
The gathering was further addressed by Johnson Edayarnmula, NRC Head, who vowed his commitment in finding solutions to the challenges faced by the child and family.
The cultural segment included a delightful dance performance by Adriel and Reena, showcasing the talents and joy of children with Down syndrome.
Dr. Ann, PMR Head, delivered the felicitation, appreciating the efforts of organisers and participants. Dr. Jijo from the Pediatric Department addressed the gathering and also shared the Down Syndrome Google notebook as source for further reading and learning.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Neethu, Development Therapist expressing gratitude to all the dignitaries, participants, organisers, and attendees for making the event a meaningful and memorable occasion.
