Pharmacists to play a crucial role in the fight against AMR

We are delighted to congratulate Mr. Biju Thomas, Head of Pharmacy Services at Believers Church Medical College, for his insightful article published in The Times of India on the occasion of World Pharmacist Day, September 25, 2024. In the article, Mr. Thomas sheds light on the critical issues surrounding Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and the misuse of antibiotics, underscoring the urgent need for responsible antibiotic use and stewardship.

His contribution is a timely reminder of the pivotal role pharmacists play in combating AMR, ensuring the effective use of antibiotics, and safeguarding global health.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a crucial area that has caught global attention, with 7 lakh people losing their battle to AMR every year. AMR emerges when antibiotics no longer work in the body, causing infections to take longer to treat, thus making treatment more difficult. AMR significantly increases the risk of severe health complications and mortality. It is estimated that 10 million people are projected to die from AMR by 2050.

As we celebrate World Pharmacist Day, it is essential to note that pharmacists are an important pillar of the health ecosystem and can significantly contribute to the fight against AMR through interventions like stewardship programs, patient education, monitoring, and collaboration.

Pharmacists are at the forefront of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) initiatives, helping to optimize the use of antibiotics and minimize the development of resistance. Pharmacist-led interventions, such as improving prescriptions, educating patients, curbing irrational use, and enhancing compliance, can have a positive impact on reducing the spread of AMR.

Patient Education
Pharmacists are often the first point of contact for patients seeking advice on medications. They should provide essential education on the proper use of antibiotics, emphasizing adherence to prescribed regimens and the dangers of misuse or overuse of antibiotics.

Collaboration
In hospital settings, pharmacists work closely with doctors and nursing staff to ensure the appropriate selection and dosing of antibiotics.

Monitoring and Evaluation
Audits and reviews of antibiotic prescriptions by pharmacists can provide deeper insights into compliance with established guidelines and AMS, thus ensuring patients receive appropriate and effective treatment.

AMS Campaign
Pharmacists should advocate for policies that support AMS, including stricter regulations on antibiotic dispensing and increased public awareness campaigns. Their involvement in national and local action plans is vital for creating a robust framework to address AMR effectively.

On this special day, we recognize the invaluable contributions of pharmacists. Their role in tackling AMR through patient education, collaboration with healthcare professionals, and advocating for sound policies are essential steps toward effectively combating AMR and ensuring a future where antibiotics remain effective tools in our medical arsenal.
