National Conference and Workshop on Peritoneal Dialysis 2024

The National Conference and Workshop on Peritoneal Dialysis , organized by Believers Church Medical College Hospital, in collaboration with the Central Travancore Nephrology Club, emphasized the importance of peritoneal dialysis as a cornerstone of home-based care for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Attended by over 200 nephrologists and healthcare professionals, the event highlighted the benefits of peritoneal dialysis, including improved quality of life, reduced hospital visits, and lower indirect costs, while addressing the limited awareness and training that hinder its widespread adoption in Kerala.

The conference, supported by the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis and the Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India, featured expert-led sessions and hands-on workshops to train healthcare providers in managing peritoneal dialysis programs. Special focus was given to catering to pediatric and neonatal patients, showcasing the versatility of this home-based treatment. Dr. Rajesh Joseph, Head of Nephrology, called for a "Peritoneal Dialysis-First" approach in Kerala, advocating for increased awareness and integration into public and private healthcare systems.

Practical training sessions demonstrated techniques for initiating peritoneal dialysis, addressing complications, and customizing patient care. The event also included a dedicated training program for nephrology postgraduates to prepare the next generation of specialists in home dialysis. This initiative is a significant step towards creating a skilled workforce and promoting sustainable, patient-centered renal care in Kerala.
