Interventional Radiology and Interventional Oncology

Interventional radiology or IR is a specialization in modern medicine where the treating
physician makes pinhole size incisions in the skin to reach various organs in the body
and deliver targetted therapy. IR treatment is a minimally invasive image guided
treatment procedure. The treating doctor is called as an interventional radiologist who is
an endovascular specialist. As the procedures are done using pinhole openings in the
skin, there is usually no scar or wound in the body and at the same time with minimal
complications. The patients usually have a faster recovery time with short hospital stay
and early return to routine work.

TREATMENT & PROCEDURES :

Gastroenterology & Hepatobiliary Interventional Procedures:

- Angioembolization and coiling in gastrointestinal emergency bleeding
- Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) and stenting
- Percutaneous cholecystostomy/Pancreatic collection drainages
- CT/Ultrasound guided percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) for intra-abdominal collections
- Shunt occlusion procedures (PARTO, BRTO, CARTO) in gastric variceal related bleeding or refractory hepatic encephalopathy

- Trans Jugular Liver Biopsy (TJLB)

Interventional Oncology Procedures:

- Liver cancer treatment – Radiofrequency/Microwave ablation, TACE, PEI
- Ablation of other tumours
- Palliative interventions – biliary stenting in advanced malignant obstructive jaundice, nerve blocks, ablation of metastases
