Project Happiness is a new venture started by our honourable District Collector, Shri. P. B. Nooh (I.A.S) and his district administration team in collaboration with Believers Church Medical College hospital. The main aim of the project is to spread happiness and improve lives of the underprivileged by inspiring young minds. We plan to create a destitute free Pathanamthitta by addressing the basic needs of this vulnerable population of the district involving college students .The project was taken up by the administration team of the college headed by Principal (Dr. Samuel Chittaranjan) and Vice Principal ( Dr. Ashu Mathai). Rev. Fr. Sijo Pandapallil (Manager and official spokesperson of BCMCH ) and Dr. Marina Rajan ( H.OD, Dept. of Community Medicine) offered full support for the successful implementation of the programme.
Initial discussion with management and students
As an initial step, all the destitute in the Thiruvalla Municipality were identified with the help of Kudumbashree units. M.B.B.S students of the college along with project coordinator ( Dr. Geethu Mathew, Asst Professor, Dept of Community Medicine), Medico social workers( Mr. Avira Chacko and Mr. Bichu. P. Babu) from BCMCH participated in the community outreach need assessment programme conducted on 21-7-19 from 9am to 6pm. The students were divided into 10 teams of 3 each and were allotted houses in Thiruvalla Municipality. Along with our students, students from Mount Zeon Medical College and Adoor Engineering College also participated in the programme. Nearly 50 houses in and around Thiruvalla were visited and basic needs assessment was done. In addition to that food kits were also distributed by the district administration to the most needy people.
After the assessment findings were presented to honourable Collector and district administration team. The main needs identified were construction of houses, need for psychological support and medical aids for the destitute. Honourable Collector appreciated the work done by the team and he told that lives of our students will be transformed in addition to the lives of the destitute. He told that the district administration will make sure that these destitute will be provided with Government aids identified in the survey. He also highlighted the importance of regular follow up visits to these houses by the team in future. The programme was concluded by a thanks giving note by Mr. Vidhu (Programme coordinator district) Dr. Geethu Mathew and Mr. Avira Chacko.
