The Neonatal Department, looks after all new born babies born in this institution, and outside, from extreme preterm babies of 24 weeks gestation to full term babies and everything in between, multiple births and complicated deliveries. Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a level III set up, capable of meeting all the challenges which a newborn baby may face in our well-equipped and staffed Intensive care unit.
Our doctors are trained to intubate and ventilate babies, either invasive or non-invasive with positive pressure, high frequency and CPAP. Our Nursing staff are a group of highly trained and motivated persons, who are capable of handling our delicate patients with extreme love and care.
We have a total of 25 beds, 15 of which has facilities for level III intensive care, while the remaining 10 beds are for isolation and for admitting babies born outside.
We admit and observe as a routine all babies born by Caesarean section for 4 hours. Similarly, all babies born with any problems are admitted, investigated and treated if consent is given . We can treat jaundiced babies with blue light and LED lights, single or double surface phototherapy. We have the facilities and wherewithal for exchange transfusions, full or partial as required.
We use all aseptic techniques and are committed to ideal hand hygiene techniques in our NICU. The excellent infection control team of the institution supports us in this.
All the babies in our unit are exclusively Breast milk fed, direct or expressed. We also educate and promote exclusive breast-feeding to the mothers of all our babies after discharge. We counsel all our mothers and grandparents on the benefits of breast-feeding as well as on diverse problems a newborn baby may face at the time of discharge. We vaccinate our babies and do Thyroid screening and for check for Hearing defects before they are discharged home. We counsel the family about the home care of the babies and answer all their questions and doubts. We follow them up regularly and record their growth and development and Vaccinations are given according to the IAP Schedule.
