Trans Anal Minimally Invasive Surgery
We have successfully performed one of the first Trans Anal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) for rectal tumour in Kerala. It is also one of the few done in India. TAMIS is done for early tumours of the rectum. Usually such tumours require a major surgery and a long hospital stay of 7 to 10 days. We have done laparoscopic surgery per anally using special ports with TAMIS technique with no abdominal wounds. The advantage is that the patient recovers very fast and the cost is also less. The disadvantage is the technical difficulty. The patient we operated was fit for discharge in 48 hours and did well by God’s grace. Considering the seminal nature of this surgery, this case has already been invited as a presentation at the next State conference in Feb 2018. Congratulations to Dr. Sujith Phiip & Team BRIGHT, Gastroenterology for the appropriate referral and Dept. of Anesthesia and General Surgery Unit III, especially Dr. Roshan and Dr. Sandeep and the OT Staff.
