Operation Theatre

People often think that an operation theatre is like a stage, but at Believers Church Medical College Hospital, because of excellent advance planning, there is rarely any drama.

In the year 2016, a total of 8270 surgeries were performed in BCMCH, including complex cases in the fields of neurosurgery, orthopaedics, hepatobiliary surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, plastic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, oncosurgery, gynecology, urology, general surgery, ENT etc. 1254 eye surgeries were also performed in the same period. The dedicated theatre staff of more than 100 nurses and technicians, along with the surgeons and anaesthetists, are focused on reducing the anxiety and maximising the success of each surgery.

The intraoperative mortality rate and the surgical site infection rate, are on par with international standards.

There are a total of 14 operation theatres, including dedicated theatres for emergency surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, ophthalmology and obstetrics. The design of the OT complex follows international guidelines. The modular operation theatres are spacious and well ventilated with laminar airflow and HEPA filters. Each theatre is equipped with the most modern anaesthetic equipment, overhead lighting and hydraulic operation tables. Each department utilises cutting edge technology sourced from internationally renowned companies like Zeiss, Olympus, Karl Storz, Wolf, Stryker, Smith & Newphew, Philips, Drager, Medtronic, Johnson and Johnson, and Dornier.

The excellent equipment and engineering work are complemented by rigorous guidelines for infection control and numerous surgical protocols. The OT complex is supported by an excellent CSSD department for sterilisation of instruments, and intensive care units located in close proximity.

Learning is the key to improvement, and the OT staff undergo round the year training for constant self-improvement. As a result, postoperative surgical complications such as surgical site infection rates are extremely low, and on par with international standards.

With its commitment to excellence, the BCMCH Operation Theatre complex aspires to achieve the best possible outcome for each and every patient.
